Union calls for seven-hour strike at Frankfurt airport
Feb 15, 2012, 18:22 GMT
Berlin - About 200 ground controllers are to go on a seven-hour strike Thursday at Frankfurt international airport, one of Europe's main hubs.
The ground controllers, who guide planes in and out of their parking bays, are to stop work from 3-10 pm (1400-2100 GMT) to demand pay raises and reduced working hours, the GdF air traffic controllers union said Wednesday.
The airport, Europe's biggest after London and Paris, said non-union staff and former controllers now working in management would step into the strikers' jobs during the stoppage.
The airport expected to keep at least half of scheduled flights moving. Monthly data shows the airport handles just over 1,200 take-offs and landings on an average day.
'There'll be no compromises over safety,' an executive said.
