Protesters against education policy clash with police in Chile
Aug 26, 2011, 5:53 GMT
Santiago - Demonstrators and police clashed in the Chilean capital Thursday during protests against the government's education policy.
The government said 210 people were arrested and 26 police injured.
The clashes came at the end of a two-day strike called by the Central Workers' Union.
An estimated 175,000 people demonstrated in Santiago and other cities, according to the government, well below the union's figure of 600,000.
Employers and the government said participation in the general strike was low.
Chilean students and teachers have been demonstrating regularly for three months to demand free public education in the country's largest protests since the end of Chile's military dictatorship in 1990.
