Haryana selects nuclear power plant site
Jun 23, 2006, 16:47 GMT
Chandigarh, June 23 (IANS) The Haryana government Friday announced it had selected a site for the setting up of a nuclear power plant in the state.
State Power Minister Venod Sharma said the site, at Kumharia village in Fatehabad district, had been approved by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India.
Two months ago, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had approved in principle Haryana's demand for the setting up of a nuclear power plant in the state.
The central government had been keen to set up the plant in neighbouring Punjab but the Amarinder Singh government had opposed it, saying it could be a security risk given Punjab's proximity to Pakistan.
Sharma said the plant would help Haryana tide over its power shortage.
The state government would make arrangements to supply adequate quantity of water to the nuclear power plant, the minister said.
