Automatic shutdown of one of two nuclear power reactors probed
Nov 6, 2006, 16:49 GMT
Cape Town - South Africa's power utility Eskom on Monday announced its Koeberg nuclear power station in the city of Cape Town was running on only one reactor after the second reactor shut itself down on Sunday.
The Koeberg Unit 2 reactor was, however, in a safe condition and investigations into the fault, believed to be with the reactor's turbine control system, were underway, Eskom spokesman Tony Scott said.
'We can meet the demand for the Western Cape - the risk of having power outages is very small,' he was quoted in a report by the Sapa news agency.
Koeberg, Africa's only nuclear power station with a production capacity of about 900 megawatts, has been experiencing problems over the last year resulting in regular and costly power outages in Cape Town and its surrounding areas.
