Swedish nuclear reactor shut down after fire - no leak
Nov 14, 2006, 8:28 GMT
Stockholm - A Swedish nuclear reactor was shut down early Tuesday over a fire in a transformer at the power plant but security systems kicked in and there was no danger of any radioactive leak, the state Nuclear Power Inspectorate said.
Officials at the Ringhals nuclear power station near Varberg, some 500 kilometres south-west of the capital Stockholm, said it would likely take several days before the reactor could be brought back online.
Four of Sweden's 10 nuclear reactors are located at Ringhals, which is owned by state-owned energy concern Vattenfall (70.4 per cent) and E.ON (29.6 per cent).
Sweden operated 12 nuclear rectors at most. Two at the Barseback plant in southern Sweden have been decommissioned, the most recent in May 2005.
