Sep 20, 2006, 19:14 GMT
New York - BP America Inc will spend 3 billion dollars to improve its Whiting, Indiana refinery to boost production of Canadian crude oil, the branch of the British company announced on Wednesday.
The upgrades at the refinery will focus on processing Canadian heavy crude oil and oil sands.
The move is set to increase output by about 15 per cent at the plant near Chicago. Construction will begin in 2007 and last through 2011, the company said.
While the plant undergoes upgrades about 2,500 workers will be brought in. The upgrade will add 60 to 80 full-time positions when it is completed.
The Whiting plant currently produces around 17.1 billion litres of fuel per year.
