Oil and gas discovered in Zambia near Angolan border
Oct 23, 2006, 9:56 GMT
Lusaka - Oil and gas have been discovered in northwestern Zambia near the border with Angola following extensive recent tests, news reports said on Monday.
A German exploration company was reported to have established the oil and gas reserves following extensive tests. President Levy Mwanawasa appointed a special committee to formulate policies to facilitate the exploration.
Mwanawasa has expressed hope that the discovery, the first of its kind in the impoverished landlocked country, would lead to further exploration in other parts of the country and, ultimately, a boost for the economy.
Exploration began in 2004 in the districts that are already known and exploited as a rich source of copper ore.
