Dec 21, 2006, 12:40 GMT
Baghdad - Negotiations are currently underway between the Iraqi Ministry of Oil and three US oil companies on building a new refinery in Karbala, the al-Sabah newspaper reported Thursday.
The new Al-Nahryn facility, costing more than two billion dollars - is expected to refine 140,000 barrels of oil per day.
Work on the new refinery will start in the first quarter of 2007.
Th Al-Nahryn refinery is part of plan to build three refineries in Karbala, Sulaimania and Nasiriyah.
During the Iraq-Iran war in the 1980s, plans were made to build a refinery in Karbala to serve the Middle Euphrates region, but the project was delayed.
Iraq produces about 2.8 million oil barrels daily.
