Vatican City - Israeli elder statesman Shimon Peres arrived in Rome ahead of a meeting Thursday with Pope Benedict XVI.
According to Israeli radio, Peres planned to deliver a message on behalf of acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert inviting the pontiff to Israel.
A Nobel Peace Prize winner, Peres is one of the leaders of the Kadima list and can expect a senior portfolio in Israel's new government.
Peres's visit follows a March 22 visit to Rome by Israeli Foreign Minister Tsipi Livni. On that occasion, the Israeli minister talked of a possibly visit to Israel by Benedict during a meeting with Vatican officials.
