Vatican confirms route of Pope Benedict XVI May visit to Poland

Warsaw - Pope Benedict XVI will pay his first official visit to Poland, homeland of his late predecessor Pope John Paul II, May 25-28, Papal Nuncio to Poland Archbishop Jozef Kowalczyk confirmed Saturday in Warsaw.
In what is sure to be an historic moment, the German-born Benedict will visit the infamous former Nazi German concentration camp Auschwitz in the southern Polish city of Oswiecim on May 28, the last day of this pilgrimage.
The Nazis killed more than a million people, mostly European Jews, at the death camp, designed as part Nazi German WWII dictator Adolf Hitler planned total genocide against ethnic Jews.
His visit, themed 'Staying Stong in Faith', will include among other destinations, the capital Warsaw, the royal southern city of Krakow and Wadowice, the birthplace of Pope John Paul II.
