Oct 7, 2006, 13:43 GMT
Madrid - Spain deported over 2,200 would-be-immigrants to Africa in the last two weeks, local press on Saturday reported the Spanish Foreign Ministry as saying.
By the end of October, 5,000 Africans are expected have been deported by plane from the Canary Islands to their countries of origin.
Most of those deported so far have been from Senegal, with some coming from Guinea-Bissau.
So far this year, 17 times more illegal immigrants have been deported by plane to their countries of origin than in the last five years.
Increased surveillance of the West African coastal waters have led to 50 boats with 2,300 refugees on board being intercepted and sent back.
Since the beginning of the year, 27,000 would-be-immigrants have arrived from the West African coast by boat to the Canary Islands.
