Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus elects new primate
Nov 5, 2006, 17:43 GMT
Nicosia - An assembly of 131 clerics and lay representatives of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus selected Bishop Chrysostomos of Paphos on Sunday to be the church's new primate.
Bishop Chrysostomos of Paphos, acting primate since the throne was vacated in September due to the illness of Archbishop Chrysostomos, won 73 ballots in the third and final round of voting.
The new Archbishop Chrysostomos, 65, became the prime candidate after the favourite, Bishop Nikiphoros of Kykkos, was edged out of the elections, despite having most of the votes, in a complicated process on Saturday.
Supporters of the bishop of Kykkos walked out of voting Saturday in protest.
Bishop Athanassios of Limassol was the runner-up in the elections with 57 votes.
The Church of Cyprus is autocephalous or independent of any other Orthodox church even though the spiritual leader of all Greek Orthodox peoples is Patriarch Bartholomeus who sits in Istanbul.
