Spain's Christmas lottery to deal out record 2.1 billion euros
Nov 17, 2006, 12:10 GMT
Madrid - Spain's traditional Christmas lottery will deal out prizes worth a record 2.1 billion euros (2.5 billion dollars) this year, up 120 million euros from 2005, media reports said Friday.
The jackpot known as El Gordo or The Fat One is worth 3 million euros per series of tickets. But few winners become millionnaires, because most only buy a few tenths of a ticket costing 200 euros.
The world's biggest lottery is also the oldest. It dates back to 1763, when King Charles III launched its predecessor to fill state coffers.
The draw will take place on December 22.
