Polish President criticizes German wooing of Russia
Dec 2, 2006, 12:42 GMT
Hamburg - Poland's president, Lech Kaczynski, has criticized the closeness between Germany and Russia, saying in an interview with a German news magazine Saturday that it should be part of the wider European Union relationship with Russia.
'I can't believe that German politicians see no difference between nations such as France, Germany and Poland on the one hand and today's Russia on the other,' Kaczynski told the Munich-based news magazine Focus.
He was speaking just before Tuesday's three-way meeting of Polish, French and German leaders in the German state of Saarland.
The president said he did not believe there was equal mutual interdependence between the Europeans and Russians on energy.
'Russia could theoretically survive without selling the gas. Europe couldn't,' he said.
He said the 'most dangerous thing' he had recently heard was that that Russia had two strategic partners, the European Union and Germany. 'I always thought that Germany was part of the EU,' he said.
Focus released the interview in advance of its Monday publication.
