Reciprocal business action against Russia justified, says Merkel
Jan 3, 2007, 15:34 GMT
Berlin - Reciprocal action by European business in the event of obstacles being erected to Russian markets was justified, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday.
'I think it is perfectly legitimate for Russia to seek greater access to western European markets,' Merkel said in an interview with the London Financial Times.
'Having said that, we must have reciprocity,' she said. 'If obstacles are being erected to protect Russian companies from European investors, nobody should resent it if the Europeans take reciprocal action.'
The interview was held to mark the launch of Germany's sixth month presidency of the European Union.
