Avalanches kill four in French Alps in two days
Jan 4, 2007, 12:19 GMT
Grenoble, France - A 20-year-old Frenchman who died in hospital early Thursday was the fourth fatality in 48 hours caused by avalanches in the French Alps, mountain security services said.
The latest victim was skiing hors piste at an altitude of 2,700 metres when he was swept away by a torrent of fresh snow. He was found by rescue workers, but ultimately died of a heart attack overnight.
A 17-year-old man also skiing hors piste died late Tuesday in an avalanche at the Les Arcs ski resort, and two men in their fifties were killed by an avalanche on Wednesday while cross-country skiing at Queyras.
After abundant snow fell following a long dry spell, the avalanche alert in the French Alps has been set at 4 on a scale of 5.
