Hungary escapes worst of killer storm
Jan 19, 2007, 7:40 GMT
Budapest - The storm that has killed at least 27 people across Northern Europe arrived in Hungary in the early hours of Friday morning without the expected venom.
Winds of around 100 kilometres per hour hit North and West Hungary, knocking down chimneys and in one case blowing a roof off a cinema.
The fire brigade was called out over 400 times, but nobody was reported injured, Tibor Dobson, spokesman for the national disaster authority, said.
The storm was expected to pass over the country later Friday evening.
