Winter storm causes great damage in Austria
Jan 19, 2007, 8:10 GMT
Vienna - The winter storm Kyrill caused considerable damage and several injuries in Austria overnight with wind speeds reaching 148 kilometres per hour in the early hours of Friday and top speeds of up to 166 km/h recorded in mountainous areas.
Local weather experts had hoped the storm would weaken more by the time it reached Austria, but the country still got off lightly as no deaths were reported.
Several thousand households were still affected by power outages Friday morning and train services were cancelled in the province of Salzburg, while a major motorway and a large number of streets were impassable due to fallen trees. Authorities reported hundreds of damaged buildings and power lines.
