Tokyo - Czech President Vaclav Klaus received an honorary doctorate from a university in Tokyo Tuesday on the first day of a four-day visit to Japan.
The honorary doctorate from Waseda University was presented for Klaus' service to his country and cultural promotion between it and Japan.
A university spokesman said the institution highly regards Klaus' efforts to bring economic and political stability to his country as well as his contributions to education.
Klaus also met with Japanese business leaders Tuesday and was expected to meet Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko Wednesday before attending dinner with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
He was also to receive an honorary doctorate from Ritsumeikan Asia-Pacific University on Friday before leaving Japan, where the Czech Republic is planning to open its first Czech cultural centre in Asia.
