Italian Prime Minister Prodi in Tokyo to strengthen ties with Japan
Apr 16, 2007, 5:39 GMT
Tokyo - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and visiting Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi met in Tokyo on Monday for the first time since Abe took office in September to discuss UN Security Council reforms and climate change.
The two leaders were expected to reaffirm their cooperation in denuclearizing North Korea and to discuss issues relating to the Middle East, as well as promoting a political dialogue, according to Japanese government officials.
Prodi's three-day visit comes at a time Japan is trying to gain more of a diplomatic and economic presence in Europe.
The Italian premier, who arrived in Japan on Sunday, was scheduled to visit the Tokyo National Museum, escorted by Abe and his wife.
