The US pursues this missile defence system in its own interest:

1. Make Europe the battle ground of its foreign policies, having this missile defence system on US soil brings the 'US enemies' too close to the US.
2. Drive a wedge in between Europe and Russia. US cannot afford good relations between Europe countries and Russia.
3. Try to keep the notion going that Russia is still the enemy.
4. Expand US military access further into Europe.

The US cannot operate without a hidden agenda?

What is NOT hidden by this is the unforgivable stupidity of it. The Bush Administration is fighting the wrong war with, I might add, the wrong weapons. I am beginning to think like Chuck Hagel. Something has gone very badly wrong in Washington.

Bob, let me think for ya. You don't seem to be doing too good on your own:

1. The system is desired in Europe for the same reasons it's in Alaska in the U.S.A., because that's where it needs to be to intercept a ballistic missile in flight. By the time it's over the U.S., it's too late.
2. Anyone thinking the U.S. needs to drive a wedge between Europe and Russia is a bit thin between the ears. Half my family lives in Russia, and if Europe trusts the current Russian leadership, they haven't gotten any smarter than they were in the 1900's.
3. See #2.
4. The U.S. has been trying to get OUT of Europe over the last 15 years, not 'gain greater military access'. Perhaps if the European spine were as hefty as the European mouth, the U.S. wouldn't ever have to send anyone to Europe ever. Believe it or not, we'd like to spend that money at home.

Can the Europeans get a clue?

There are multiple reasons for deploying these misslile defense systems. Whether these reasons are valid or not depends on the viewer. I personally think these are being deployed there under the guise of providing a means of defense but in reality serve only to project US power and support US business concerns. But nothing is new here since the US administration seems bent on pursuing foreign policies that promote their business interests but not necessarily those of the majority of its citizens.

'...the US should use 'diplomatic and political measures' to prevent nuclear proliferation...'

How laughably ironic is this statement as it is consisitently the Russian government and its policies which, in fact, consistently throw up road blocks to the US efforts to deminish proliferation.

I think people need to understand a few things
1. While Americans have been consumed with this ' war on terror' the world has been taking a new shape. Remember this : Terrorists are like any other rebel group, except they aim to kill innocent people and have radical religious agends. However, they operate ONLY with the help of higher backing
2. Countries like Iran ,Syria, Sudan are higher backing. Syria openly allows Hamas and Hezboillah to use it's territory as head quarters, Iran openly backs Hezbollah and Hamas, funds them and trains them with their military(Quds force)
3. Countries like Russia, aware of the above facts, back Iran and Syria, just recently installing a MISSLE DEFENSE system in Iran ( who does Iran need defense from????) and is/was building a NUCLEAR power plant in Iran!
Russia also sells fighter planes and missles to Syria. Russia also sells weapons to Venezuela, encroaching on our sphere of influence (sound familiar?)
4. It appears that the US is simply playing ball, and is it a coincidence that just recently the Russians have stalled development of the Bushir NUCLEAR power plant in Iran over ridiculous technicalities? NO.
5. So of course the US ( nor the EU) is really worried about a missle coming from some Rogue state and hitting europe. The US is worried about the Russians and Chinese backing rogue states. The US is worried about the Chinese and Russians selectively picking out western enemies to be their friends. The US is worried about China shooting missles at satellites in outer space.
6. Look at the big picture, and try not to be a far left liberal american idiot. Stop reading ONLY the NYtimes and cbsnews

And to Bob:
1. The EU (not the US) can not afford good relations with Russia.
2. The EU ( mainly France and Germany) needs to grow balls - trying reading about their bullshit nato committments in Northern Afghanistan, where ZERO fighting is going on
3. We have been decreasing our bases in EU for years, not increasing.
4. The Russians used to brutally occupy all of the Eastern european countries that are getting protection with the shield. Talk to anyone who is Polish or Czeck or from Latvia, etc
5. Most importantly, think before you speak

When it comes to stifling nuclear proliferation, the United States is its own greatest stumbling block. Mind you, the US does have perfectly sound reasons for the majority of its defense policies.

Unfortunately, the missile defenses system, which will work to a large degree by the way, is not one of the wiser policies. It is very poor strategy. The best defense is still very much the overwhelming offense. The money now being spent on missile defense would be much better spent on quieter boomers and updated stealth aircraft.

This is the same old power play. The US is trying to provoke other nations to up the ante and increase their missile stockpiles. Then we can expand ours. It's nothing new.

But does anyone else think this is war profiteering on the part of missile distributors? The companies that make weapons in the US have an undue influence in the white house and Congress, regardless of party. Actually it was GOP president Eisenhower who warned America of the military-industrial complex. We're fighting non-conventional forces, why waste our money on expensive weapon systems? Lobbyists ... that's why.

Maybe if soldiers had a better lobbying group, they'd get armor, or adaquate medical treatment. I don't mean to sound unpatriotic though. As a veteran, I just think that the war industry has a life of its own. It's a beast that must constantly be fed or face dismantling. So young men and the wealth of a nation are sacrificed on it's altar. To what gain?

Wars aren't won with bombs. Ask any general.

Thanks for bearing with my rant.

Captain Carl,

This outfit likely will not strike you as being perfect, and it certainly is not strong enough to do what you want--yet. But, it is here and it is a start:

I am quite shocked by the educational standard of some of the posters here.

The USA is spending billions of dollars on a system that will not help at all in the current climate. Is the system going to stop a suicide bomber or a dirty bomb or even a hijacked plane? - NO.

The plans for this system are just pulling the wool over our eyes, there is no missile threat from Iran, possibly from North Korea but not long range enough to reach Europe or the US. There is a threat to Japan but that is being dealt with by the US/Japan missile defence system.

Jackee, have you been to Turkey? Turkey is a secular country and is not extremist in the slightest. Millions of Turks were on the streets parading to keep it that way (which it will) and if Turkey joins the EU (which it will) then that will make a stronger EU and I welcome it.
