Ukrainian Parliament rules out impeachment of Yushchenko
Apr 21, 2007, 16:58 GMT
Kiev - The Ukrainian parliament on Saturday ruled out impeachment procedures against President Viktor Yushchenko in his ongoing power struggle with Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, the Interfax news agency reported.
There was no danger that such a step would be taken, Speaker of the Supreme Rada Oleksander Moroz was quoted as saying in Kiev by Interfax.
The comments were made amid signs that the rivalry between Yushchenko and the parliamentary majority around Yanukovich might soon come to an end after going on for weeks.
Yanukovich on Friday had announced that he would seek a speedy settlement with his opponent Yushchenko.
The president again showed his willingness to cancel his early April order to dissolve parliament.
Yushchenko asked the prime minister to collaborate on a legal ruling over changing the majorities in parliament.
The president had accused his political opponents of buying off 11 legislators with bribes.
Yushchenko fears that further fluctuations between parliamentary parties might leave him facing a two-third majority, which could overrule the veto of the head of state.
Meanwhile in Kiev, followers of both camps were continuing their demonstrations.
