Three killed in Italian fireworks factory accident
Apr 23, 2007, 16:15 GMT
Naples, Italy - At least three people were feared dead Monday after a fireworks factory exploded in a small town near Naples, Italy.
Police said the factory's owner and his two nephews were still missing more than one hour after the explosion, which was heard several kilometres away.
Rescuers were forced to wait before entering the building for fear that more fireworks may yet be set off.
Ambulance staff said body parts had been blown 'hundreds of metres' from the site.
One witness told reporters he had felt as if nearby Mount Vesuvius had erupted.
Similar accidents take place frequently in southern Italy and often involve small, illegal fireworks factories.
In one of the worst such accidents, five people died on July 5, 2004 in another factory near Naples.
