Blair praises Yeltsin's "vital role" in Russia's history

London - British Prime Minister Tony Blair praised former Russian president Boris Yeltsin as a 'remarkable man' Monday. 'It is with sadness that I learned of the death of former president Boris Yeltsin. He was a remarkable man who saw the need for democratic and economic reform and, in defending it, he played a vital role at a crucial time in Russia's history,' Blair said in a statement. Former British prime minister Sir John Major said in an interview with the BBC that Yeltsin changed Russia's future. 'He brought democracy to Russia,' Major said. Former British foreign secretary Malcolm Rifkind said Yeltsin had had a powerful influence on the configuration of the modern world. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
