Rescue operation underway to bring immigrants to Greek mainland
Apr 26, 2007, 8:55 GMT
Athens - A rescue operation was currently underway by Greek coast guard vessels and helicopters to bring 200 illegal immigrants travelling in a rickety boat safely to shore, state television reported Thursday.
The immigrants, of unknown origin, are reportedly sailing in a small boat between the Aegean islands of Kea and Makroniso in rough seas.
Coast guard frigates and two super puma helicopters are rushing to the Aegean Sea in an effort to save the immigrants.
Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants attempt to enter European Union Greece each year, mainly from neighbouring Turkey, the Middle East and Africa.
