Greek coast guard rescues 200 immigrants (Roundup)
Apr 26, 2007, 12:31 GMT
Athens - Greece's coast guard rescued 200 illegal immigrants on Thursday after battling rough seas in the Aegean Sea in a rickety wooden vessel, state television reported.
Coast guard vessels and two super puma helicopters were immediately deployed to the Aegean Sea, between the islands of Kea and Makroniso, to save the immigrants who were sailing in a small boat.
Officials towed the immigrants, of unknown origin, safely to the port of Lavrio, located east of Athens and were immediately taken to the area's health care centre for treatment. The majority of the immigrants were reportedly suffering from severe fatigue.
Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants attempt to enter European Union Greece each year, mainly from neighbouring Turkey, the Middle East and Africa.
