French human-rights groups criticize new ministry
May 19, 2007, 11:47 GMT
Paris - One day after the new French cabinet was announced, human-rights groups published a polemic Saturday attacking the new Ministry for Immigration and National Identity.
Organizations such as Uni(e) and France Terre d'Asile in the French press Saturday warned against xenophobia.
Eight historians also criticized the development, saying 'it is not the role of a democratic state to define identity.'
Newly elected French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced his cabinet Friday and appointed Brice Hortefeux to the new ministry position of cooperation, immigration, integration and national identity.
The new post has attracted heavy criticism for combining immigration and national identity.
