German authorities consider monitoring hard-core demonstrators

Berlin - German authorities are considering more intensive monitoring of the radical groups at the core of the violent demonstrations that erupted around the Heiligendamm G8 summit, August Hanning, a state secretary in the Interior Ministry said. In remarks to Der Spiegel news magazine, published Saturday, Hanning said: 'We have to monitor this milieu, which closes itself off from the rest of society in a highly conspirative way. 'We are very concerned about these independent groups,' he said, adding that the German authorities charged with protecting the constitution should play an enhanced role in attempting to penetrate the anarchist organizations. Hanning said methods such as undercover agents, increased surveillance and listening into phone conversations should be considered. Hanning praised the efforts of the 18,000 police officials protecting the G8 throughout the course of the summit from Wednesday to Friday, despite successes scored by the protestors in breaching the police cordon and blockading routes to the heavily guarded conference venue. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
