Spain detains fourth al-Qaeda suspect
Jun 29, 2007, 11:35 GMT
Madrid - Spanish police have detained a fourth Moroccan al- Qaeda suspect in the Barcelona region, the Interior Ministry said Friday.
Abdellatif Zeharaoui, 29, was held in Coloma de Gramenet late Thursday. His arrest followed those Tuesday of three other Moroccans, who have been jailed preventatively.
The four are suspected of belonging to a cell linked to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, an Algerian-based organization which is blamed for more than 30 deaths in a bombing attack in the North African country on April 11.
The cell spread propaganda and sought recruits for military training camps in Africa's Sahel zone.
The detentions were made on an international arrest warrant issued by Morocco, which seeks the extradition of the four suspects.
Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb seeks to become the arm of al- Qaeda in northern Africa and southern Europe. Spain is currently trying 27 mainly Moroccan suspects for the 2004 Madrid train bombings, which killed 191 people.
