Pope to promote women to Vatican top jobs, cardinal says

Jul 19, 2007, 9:43 GMT

Rome - Pope Benedict XVI may be about to appoint women to some of the Vatican's top posts, a leading cardinal suggested in remarks carried by Italian newspapers Thursday.

'Everybody knows we are discussing new appointments at the Vatican,' said Tarcisio Bertone, who as its secretary of state is one of the Vatican's most influential figures after the pope, 'I certainly think some of these will be taken by women.'

Bertone singled out women's charisma, potential and sense of responsibility as qualities that could help them 'render great services' to the pope and the Church.

The Vatican hierarchy is by tradition dominated by males.

And while congregations - the most important departments within the Roman Curia - must by rule by headed by ordained priests, there is no specific reason why women should not be allowed to take up key roles within other offices.

At the moment, top female officials are scarce. One notable exception is Mary Ann Glendon, an American who in 1994 was appointed by the late Pope John Paul II to head the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, an important body charged with advising the pope on such issues as globalisation and technological advances.

Very interesting that such a thought is floated out there while Benny is on vacation.... I really think this is meant to divert attention from the Latin Mass and the Pope is the Boss stuff that has been going around for a couple weeks now. Those other defective churches have women in key roles, so why not the 1 True Church.

I think where it is allowed to have Women to work it would be fine. But I think any women appointed should be out standing Catholics! They should obey all the teachings of the church. Also they should Have to agree with Things such as ( no women being ordained )no birth control and other dissident oppinions. All faithful catholics that are faithful to all the teachings of the church believe that women in high places in the church had a big influence on making seminarys open their doors to homosexuals, which in turn were all most all the priest involved with the scandals were homosexuals.

Dissidents (meaning)1. characterized by departure from accepted beliefs or standards

The Church is sooo advanced. It only took them 2007 years before they think women can sit in some rubber stamp job!!

Jesus wanted it that way all along!

How much money Vatican has??? How many people are dying of starvation around the world???

I am sure, Jesus would've sat on trillions of dollars while other people suffered and died!!!

In an interview by the Sunday Telegraph with a Vatican exorcist, the question was asked, 'Why do many more women seem to become possessed than men?' To which the exorcist replied, 'Ah, that we do not know. They may be more vulnerable because, as a rule, more women than men are interested in the occult.' That is sadly true! There are so many convents and retreat centers run by progressive Sisters that are very into the occult. If the Vatican does hire women in such positions, hopefully they will choose females who are true to the Catholic faith and do not stray.

JenniferJul 19th, 2007 - 18:07:24

(continued) That's not meant to imply that all females, or even all progressives are that way; of course not. Just as the Vatican surely would take care in choosing a male with good, devout character, so surely they will take care in equally choosing a devout woman, and devout women are plentiful and can in fact contribute to the church greatly.

I'm not a big fan of women in positions of leadership in the Church both because Christ chose His apostles solely from among men and the Church has a centuries-old tradition of male leadership in the Vatican, and because recent experience (as other posts have pointed out) indicates a large fraction of women (nuns) aggressively pursuing leadership positions are dissidents and/or occultists. I'm not sure why, but it seems to me few truly devout & orthodox women seem interested in posts like the ones described. I also think that positions of leadership in the Church are positions of spiritual fatherhood and of the exercise of authority; motherhood has more a connotation of nurturing than of shepherding and disciplining. As for posts pointing out other denominations' having women in high positions, it seems to me those same denominations are some of the most liberal/heterdox and morally permissive (eg the Anglicans and other 'mainline Protestant' denominations), and that the women in those high positions (much like so-called 'power nuns' in the Church) are disproportionately of that same liberal/heterodox morally permissive disposition themselves.

In response to Pope Is Cool, the Vatican does not have trillions of dollars. Do you know how they pay for the upkeep of St. Peter's Basilica? From the money people donate to light candles in the basilica. Does this sound like an organization that is sitting on trillions? I know the Knights of Columbus donates millions of dollars each year to the Pope, which the Pope directs to various charities, the majority of which help the poor. The Vatican is rich in artwork and architecture, but not cold hard cash. Please get your facts straight before making accusations.

Put Mother Angelica (if only it were possible) or the sister forming the wonderful Dominicans in Ann Arbor or Alice von Hildebrand and there are so many others - like those orthodox women (some attorneys) fighting the so called Human Rights groups of the UN. We need such types...and they could advise certain bishops how to teach the Truth! They could also offer advice in the true formation of religious vocations. With such at the top, it just might make sister labyrinth/reiki get in line with the real teachings of the Church and save a lot of souls!

The death in the world today continues, and it is so frightening to think that the Church, will close it's eyes, and continue, and aide with this death. The death of 'Fatherhood.' Just like Liberal thinkers, who no longer believe in God as Father, as Jesus called Him, but as an Omnipresent being. This is just like the time, of Communist Russia, or Nazi Germeny, when all the fathers, were sent off to war, and then the state taught the children. But, who will be the state, and who will remain and protect the children. And Bertone, is a Liberal thinker, according to some. Least Fatima be forgotten. But there are many very good Sister, who do alot of good for our Church, and Our Faith, in their faith, and prayers.

Also read 'The Permanment Instruction of the Alta Venita, before one more child, is unprotected, and victimized. This is not the Rock in which Our Lord placed His Church. The strength is in our Fathers (priests), and the loving prayers of our Mothers (sisters, nuns). And you do not think that our Lord, does not hear the prayers, of our mothers. The gift from God, which no 'man' can ever share, is in the creation of life, which is the greatest of gifts. And our sisters, and nuns share in that gift as Mothers, as teachers of this life. Men, are given the gift of 'Fatherhood' as leaders, as protectors of this life. May Our Church Remain Always Strong.

Eric have you forgotten that Mary the mother of Jesus was the first apostle, her role didn't end when her son died on the cross it continued. Her role was of a high position, not only as mother but as a great leader in helping the new church grow. Her will was one with Our Father in heaven filled with the holy spirit she was therfore was a great support in guiding the chosen apostles in in their ministries.
It is good that the pope through the guidance of the holy spirit has seen what value women can bring to building up the Body of Christ. We need to prayer for those who will be given such positions. Yes, I agree those chosen should be practising their faith true to teaching of the Holy Catholic Church.
Let us not forget the great women saints like St Catherine of Siena, St Theresa of Avila and many more who were moved by the Holy Spirit to keep it true to the teaching of Christ.
We need to support Our Holy Father Pope Benedict by our prayers and fasting, he has been chosen to lead the One True Catholic Church through very hard and difficult times. Let us not be afraid of where he will lead us.

There should only be two requirements for people working in these positions. And I am speaking only about positions where clergy are not required to be in the position. First, that the person is qualified. Second, that they accept all the teachings of the Catholic Church and they live according to them. It is sad to see comments here which are sarcastic and negative. That does not show Christ-like and that is what a Christian is - a little Christ.

The Pope's going to appoint women? How many does he know? Clergy, at least the RC kind, either just don't see women, or they look at them in the wrong way.

After millennia of patriarchy, the Catholic church does not understand women. And some of your 'posters' do not appear to understand Jesus.

If I, as a woman had a top post at the Vatican, I would have fought with all the vigilance of a mother to protect our children from child molestation. As a mother I am horrified that this problem was handled so poorly.
If I, as a woman had influence at the Vatican, I would have fought for more orthodox seminaries, where homosexuality was not apart of the agenda. I would have strongly encourage off the track religious orders to change their ways. But most of all I would have taken our often overlooked, forgotten, and taken granted faithful religious orders, put them on a pedestal for all to see and learn from, as role models.
As faithful religious orders have much to offer, I feel woman too have much to offer at top posts at the Vatican. We are the heart of the family. The glue that keeps it together. We love, we hear, we see, we think and do things from a different perspective then men. That's what makes us so amazing.
As a complete woman we find no need to be one of the guys and as God forbids a priest. God has endowed woman with many beautiful and splendid gifts. One which is still echoed 'behind every great man there is a great woman'. And a soul who glories in God's love knows their place.

Isn't respecting women, and allowing them to be successes in our society, completely un-christian? The christian church has hated, demeaned, and held back the female of our species for centuries. I don't trust what's going on. Until the bible is re-written, it's completely against the rules for him to do this. What gives? Won't he 'burn in hell' for going against his silly book?

The Church must change with the times, before it said that slavery was good because it was in the Bible. Then a woman should bear a child with pain because it is in the Bible (that was until Queen Victoria decided to bear her 8th child without pain). So let the Church be moved by the Spirit and if you read Christopher Hitchens you would understand why the Church is becoming obsolete in modern times. She does not respond to the reality of the modern times 'which is why the devotions of today are only the echoing repetitions of yesterday, sometimes ratcheted up to screaming point so as to ward off the terrible emptiness.' So the Church has to shape up or lose more people.

Thank God for the sacrament of reconciliation for sinners like me and the rest of us (John 20:21-23).

Thank God for His church being the pillar and foundation of truth (1 Tim. 3:15).

Thank God for leaving us a proper authority 'the Pope' (Matthew 16:18-19)

What's disappointing is that so many will NEVER know the fullness of faith!

Did you know that there are over 33,000 protestant Christian denominations all proclaiming to possess the truth.

Did you know that the Catholic Church goes through the entire bible on a three year cycle.

Sister Mary Elizabeth, and Charles V, are the same person. This has nothing to do with faith. If you read 'My Only Friend Is Darkness' by Barbara Dent, Chapter 7, 'Iam, Me And Eve.' This is why in the middles ages they understood Satan as a female, as in 'The Dolorous Passion Of Our Lord Jesus Christ' as a vision of Anne Catherine Emmerich. Also our courts of law, seem to always prove that man, and women are not equal. Women are mostly proven hormonal, were men seem to always be proven calculating in murder cases. Which goes to show that men, have a greater capacity for thought. Or maybe not, because women have milked this poor me, to the point of were they can even get away with murder. Even look now in the US, the difference in out comes between Martha Steward, and Conrad Black. To all the good men, and women of faith, this has gone far beyond the Will of God. This has truly gone into the arena of Reformation, were everyone is self-willed, and has their own idea of what God wants.Poor me, can sure pull the wool over most peoples eyes. Look at the foundress of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, the person who came up with the 'Negro Project,' and some of her statements; 'extermination of the human weed,' 'the cessation of charity, morons, misfits, sterilization of genetically inferior races.' Now didn't poor me, sure pull the wool over our eyes. She was also a communist sympathizer. Which leads to a whole nother ballgame. And now,how many innocent childern have been murdered. Also in 1920's, and 30's 'Eugenics'
was a form of racism popular among the intellectual elite. Again Margaret, was a member of this group of elite group, in New York.. Also just to mention; 'The Russian Effort To Abolish Marriage' The Atlantic; July 1926. Our Lady of Fatima, was right on when she asked for the Consercration of Russia, to Her Immaculate Heart. They were told that the greatest sin, would be sins of the flesh, and women have traditionally always been more aware of their bodies then men, until the last, maybe thirty years, because women have forced men to be more aware of their bobies, their (tears, tears, poor, poor me) feelings. And so how we have what kind of men, coming out, today. Today no one knows the their direction, everyone is lost, and no one has a home. I heard it said, one time, that Satan will have a hundred years, to see what he can do... Oct 13, 1917?.......... Just for laughs, Ha,Ha,Ha.

Well, well, well, all you brainwashed catholic goodie-goodies. The catholic church will eventually fall, like the Roman empire once did. At least, let's hope so. The Romans, who themselves killed Jesus, eventually, some hundreds of years after his death, took and re-worked many of the tenets of the old Jewish faith, blended this with Goddess religions of old, and came up with a brand new religion and branded it catholicism, with all its dogma, doctrine, idolatry, hoards of money in the billions of billions now, and they say...it is the ONE true religion. Hogwash.

The one true religion is absent of dogma. The one true religion has NO perfidious old men dictating that women must be ever-producing, powerless, under-the-thumb, obedient, mindless slaves to egotistical males. Please.

When religions of this world change their views about 1/2 of the world's blessed population, and pays Woman her due regard, and apologizes for their treatment of her for the past 2,000 years I might just give that church a paltry bit of my respect. Until then, all those farty, effeminate, woman-hating old boys can go wank in the back room for all I care. Their fear and loathing of Woman will come to an end one day, and there will be a reckoning. God alone will deal with them then.
