Russia's S-400 Triumph missile defence system goes into operation

Moscow- Russia Monday began operating Monday its new S-400 Triumph missile defence system amid a dispute with the United States over a proposed defence shield to be based in eastern Europe, Interfax news agency reported.
It quoted Alexander Selin, Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force, as saying the new facility would initially protect Moscow. The aim was to deploy the system in all major industrial regions by 2015.
The S-400 has anti-aircraft/anti-missile missiles said to be capable of intercepting objects flying at altitudes as low as 10 metres.
Russia has repeatedly shown its military capabilities in the row with the US over the defence shield to be based in Poland and the Czech Republic.
Moscow seeks to prevent the deployment of US missiles in Poland which it deems a threat to its own security.
However, Washington says the system should fend off possible Iranian missiles. Moscow has offered to cooperate with Washington in missile defence. The two sides are to continue talks in September.
