Violent storms strike north-eastern, central Switzerland
Aug 7, 2007, 2:19 GMT
Bern - Violent storms struck parts of north-eastern and central Switzerland late Monday disrupting rail services and prompting at least one rescue.
The Jura, Bern and Soluthurn cantons were hit the hardest.
Five people had to be rescued from a car trapped in water beneath an underpass at the Zoo at Cremines in the Jura, where heavy rain and giant hailstones fell, Swiss wire service SDA reported.
Several homes were damaged by landslides in Obwalden. Flooding closed the railway station at Gaensbrunnen in Solothurn canton, and train service was disrupted between Alpnachstad and Hergiswil in Nidwalden.
