Switzerland returns to normal after heavy rains
Aug 10, 2007, 8:33 GMT
Berne - Roads were reopened and rail services were returning to normal Friday after torrential rains swept across Switzerland.
Flooding and mudslides had brought chaos to many parts of the country from the Jura in the north-west, across Berne, Fribourg and Aargau down to canton Vaud in the south-west.
A number of homes were evacuated as flood levels rose.
Lake and river levels were subsiding after reaching critical levels. Householders near Lake Bieler in canton Berne were still on alert as the record water level began to fall.
Some areas in the Jura were still without electricity after suffering some of the worst flooding in its history.
Record levels of rain had fallen in 24 hours between Wednesday and Thursday. Zurich saw one of the highest amounts, 97 mm.
The damage is expected to cost around 60 million francs (50.2 million dollars) for buildings alone.
