Madrid - Twelve Africans are reported to have drowned off the coast of the Canary Islands in the latest tragedy to strike would-be migrants attempting to travel to Europe, Spanish state radio RNE reported Monday.
According to RNE, a boat with 29 migrants aboard had on Sunday sank off the island of Fuerteventura. Some 28 of those aboard were rescued by authorities, with one however perishing in the attempt.
The migrants told their rescuers that 11 fellow travellers including two youths had died during the seven-day journey from the west African coast, RNE said.
Their bodies were thrown overboard, the report added.
