Aug 30, 2007, 4:21 GMT
Tokyo - On her second day in Japan, German Chancellor Angela Merkel was received Thursday by Japanese Emperor Akihito in his palace in Tokyo.
The two discussed climate change, protection of the environment and the promotion of renewable energies, in what was to be a 20-minute meeting that lasted somewhat longer.
The emperor, whose last visit to Germany was in 1993, stated his interest in good Japanese-German relations.
The attendance with Emperor Akihito was a high-point for Merkel's first visit to Japan.
On Wednesday, Merkel met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and pledged that their countries would be at the vanguard of efforts towards the reduction of greenhouse gases.
During her three-day stay in Japan the German chancellor is also to visit Kyoto and Osaka.
