Shark located off Spanish beach (Roundup)
Aug 30, 2007, 12:27 GMT
Murcia, Spain - Several beaches have been closed in south-eastern Spain after a shark was sighted offshore, emergency coordinators said.
Municipal employees and biologists located the shark, which was between 1.5 and 2 metres long, at about 20 metres off San Javier near Murcia.
They intended to capture it and to release it further out on the sea, if a medical check showed it to be healthy.
The shark 'is probably more afraid of us than we of it,' said Fernando Postigo, an expert in charge of beach security.
It was not clear which species the shark belonged to.
The shark was the second sighted near Spanish beaches within two weeks. A shark measuring 1.60 metres was captured near Tarragona and died in an aquarium. It turned out to have swallowed two fishing hooks.
