Athens - Coastguard officials detained 36 illegal immigrants and a human trafficker off the Aegean island of Samos on Tuesday.
Officials said 16 illegal immigrants and a Turkish national, who was believed to have smuggled them into the country, were intercepted by a coastguard patrol vessel near Cape Prasso, off Samos.
Earlier, another 20 illegal immigrants of various nationalities, were intercepted soon after landing on the island in the early hours Tuesday. The trafficker evaded arrest.
Thousands of illegal immigrants from the Middle East, Turkey and Africa attempt to enter the European Union via Greece every year.
