Coastguard arrests illegal immigrants on three Greek islands
Sep 21, 2007, 11:42 GMT
Athens - Coastguard officials arrested three separate groups of illegal immigrants on three eastern Greek islands while trying to reach land, authorities said Friday.
In the first incident, a boatload of 16 illegal immigrants and a human trafficker were arrested near the island of Lesvos while another 20 people, including the captain, were apprehended near Leros island as their boat began taking in water.
Officials also detained 10 more foreigners, including four minors, on the island of Samos after their inflatable vessel arrived on shore from neighbouring Turkey.
Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants attempt to enter the European Union via Greece in rickety vessels, mainly from Turkey, the Middle East and Africa.
