Spanish police discover 15 refugees in ship container

Barcelona - Spanish police found 15 refugees, thought to be Palestinians, in a container on a merchant vessel in Barcelona's port, officials reported Saturday. They said the 15 - including eight men, seven women and two children - were in a greatly weakened state of health and had been taken to hospital. A port worker alerted police when he heard cries for help coming from a container, which had been brought by a merchant vessel operating under the flag of the Marshall Islands. The container belonged to a Turkish company. Officials were trying to ascertain the itinerary of the vessel, but they believed that the refugees must have spent upwards of a week in the container. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
