This act by the catholic church makes me ashamed that i was born and brought up in the catholic faith. Most if not all of these priests would have been supporters of franco, therefore supporters of fasicm ,yes their deaths where horrific but so where the deaths of people whos only crime was to be a member of a trade union will the church make these victims of franco and the fascists saints ,i think not.Facism was and still is a threat to decent people the world over, franco was evil mussolline was evil hitler was evil the church supported all of these monsters ! why because they where anti communist anti socailist anti trade unionist and that was enough for the church to turn a blind eye to the geurnica's auschwist's and the belsen's .
A spokesman for the church say's that thier support of franco was only because these red monsters main aim was the extinction of the church, strange because history tells us that these ''red monsters''where fighting for a free world against the worst mass murderers in the history of the world.
perhaps we should not be suprised at this move by the church given that the pope was himself a member of Hitlers armed force's ,of course as he has said ''not by choice''.
And no mention of the Basque Catholic priests killed by Franco's troops for supporting the cause of Basque self-determination. Nor of the role of those Catholic priests who would point out to the Nationalists those who were republicans or trade unionists, who were then taken away and shot.
I would say that any Catholic who is DEVOUT would never question the teaching authority of the Church (which I remind you, we believe to be the BRIDE OF CHRIST Himself!). When the Church adds a name to the list of the Blessed or declares a person or persons to be among the Saints, she is speaking (we believe) without error. If you don't believe this you are free to leave, God knows we have enough bad Catholics already...and since our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has become successor to the Chair of St. Peter---the 'cafeteria' (or picking what doctrine you to believe in) is closed! Thanks be to God!
Fr. Pius, OSB
