Suicide bombing considered possible cause of Russian bus blast
Nov 1, 2007, 4:57 GMT
Moscow - Authorities in Russia said a suicide attack was the possible cause of a bus explosion in a Volga River city that killed eight people.
The explosives detonated at a height of 1 to 1.2 metres from the floor of the bus, indicating a suicide bomber might have been carrying them on his body, Alexander Konovalov, the Kremlin's representative for the Volga region, said Wednesday night on state television.
The bombing occurred in a full bus during Wednesday morning's commute in the centre of Togliatti, 800 kilometres south-east of Moscow. More than 50 people were also injured.
Security experts said they suspected the bombing might have been carried out to destabilize the country ahead of December 2 parliamentary elections.
Suspicion immediately fell on Chechen militants, but investigators said they could not rule out criminal elements being behind the bombing or an unintentional detonation of illegally held explosives.
