Greek students and teachers protest for education reform
Nov 1, 2007, 14:10 GMT
Athens - Universities remained shut throughout Greece on Thursday as thousands of students and teachers took to the streets to press the government for education reforms.
Some 4,000 students and teachers attended marches in the Greek capital Athens and in the northern port city of Thessaloniki, demanding the government provide better funding for state schools, hire more teachers and renovate facilities.
The demonstration was the first that police were allowed to film after the country's Supreme Court ruled that authorities had the right to videotape protest marches and use the evidence to help police investigations and at trials.
The country's Data Protection Authority had long insisted cameras in public areas could only be used to monitor traffic.
