Heavy snowfall leads to chaos on Austrian roads
Nov 15, 2007, 22:43 GMT
Vienna - Heavy snowfall led to chaos and standstills on roads in eastern parts of Austria on Thursday evening.
Motorways were made impassable and had to be closed due to unseasonably early snowfalls in the lower-lying areas of the country, police and emergencies services said.
Between 4,000 and 5,000 cars were left stranded on a major motorway just south of the capital Vienna with drivers forced to spend at least part of the night in their cars.
Bad weather conditions however were only partly responsible for the back-ups of up to 21 kilometres on Austria's motorways, emergency services said. Many drivers were insufficiently equipped for the early onset of winter, causing accidents or becoming stuck on the snow-covered roads.
