Sarkozy calls Algeria to a joint reappraisal of colonialism (Extra)
Dec 3, 2007, 19:49 GMT
Algiers - French President Nicolas Sarkozy in a state visit to Algeria on Monday called for a joint reappraisal of France's colonial past in the North African country.
'The time has come that Algerian and French historians jointly write this page of awful history,' said Sarkozy in Algiers.
Speaking before Algerian and French entrepreneurs, Sarkozy said: 'The colonial system was fundamentally unjust and stood in contradiction to the founding values of (the French) republic: Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.'
The French president also called for a joint fight against racism, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism, saying whoever in France threatened an Arab, Muslim or Jew, threatened the republic.
Sarkozy's visit to Algeria was temporarily called into question by anti-Semitic comments by an Algerian government minister.
