Dutch civil servants charged with hacking press agency computers
Dec 13, 2007, 14:47 GMT
Amsterdam - Four people - three of whom current employees of the Netherland's Social Affairs Ministry - are to be charged with hacking into the computer system of Dutch press agency GPD, the country's public prosecution office said Thursday.
Thomas Bruning, general-secretary of the Dutch journalists' association NVJ was pleased with the decision, adding the NVJ had 'encouraged the public prosecutor to take action.'
On November 5, GPD accused social affairs civil servants of having hacked into its computer system for several months.
The three civil servants - two of whom were former GPD journalists - accessed the GPD computers with a username and password provided by another former GPD employee.
The three civil servants allegedly also tried to manipulate news stories.
If found guilty, the four face a maximum of four years imprisonment.
