Serbian opposition leader wants Russian military bases
Dec 16, 2007, 11:12 GMT
Belgrade - The leader of the Serbian nationalist Radical Party (SRS) backs the construction of Russian military bases in Serbia, according to the Sunday edition of the Novi Sad-based Dnevnik daily.
A Russian military presence would strengthen the Serbian position in the solution of the Kosovo issue and do away with NATO threats 'for ever,' Tomislav Nikolic told the paper.
If the breakaway province Kosovo became independent, Serbia would have to introduce a 'total' block, he said.
The measure would affect all forms of traffic, including people, goods and capital.
However, the Serbian parliament had to decide on the presence of Russian troops, said Nikolic, who is also his country's frontrunner in the presidential elections scheduled for January 20.
The SRS is by far the strongest party in the Serbian parliament and is opposed to the country's rapprochement to the European Union and NATO.

Without doubt the cold war is back. With NATO engaged in Afghanistan and US in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The question now is can NATO afford this new cold war? Can the SCO which is gathering strength with Russia and China and possibly adding Iran and India down the line be countered? The western economies are in dire straits, with dollar hitting the bottom and western banking system in bad shape. In the Middle East Iran is rising whilst the Saudis are fragile. Once upon a time the west controlled the world economy and thus the oil price, today that share is diminishing fast as China followed by India, Brazil, Russia are beginning to lead. Sovereign funds now occupy greater power then IMF or WB, both controlled by west.
Most European countries are shy of military expenditure and casualties as witnessed in Afghanistan, so like before the lion share will fall on US. But it is struggling, there is growing underclass followed by returning war veterans. The economic morass of the Bush years will soon catch up, creating internal tensions and political paralysis.
The pact where the living standards of the common man were kept high, which kept most disinterested is breaking fast. Disillusion and disenchantment has a habit of turning into violent reaction!!
Putin is far more clever politician and tactician then any western counterpart. For so many years I read article upon article dismissing the Russia has the spent force, now I realise what the Germans must have read about the eastern front during the second world war only one day to wokenup by a Russian soldier in Berlin!!
People like this guy are the real danger to Europe. These elements must be eliminated once and for all in the European lands of influence. People like this guy, don't feel or think European. In order to keep themselves in power forever, they would be ready to bring into their countries the highest bidder, be that Chinese, Indian, Russian, African, Cuban, whatever, just to stay in power and treat their citizens as robo-people. It is disguisting to see that such low lifers still exist around us.
It seems like Marie would need a WWIII to sort it out.
First off, Russia to the urals is part of continental Europe and secondly can you blame the Serbians for wanting the reassurance that Russian military bases would bring them in terms of preventing Nato from bombing at will. At least NATO would think twice about bombing Serbia if the Russians where there.
Marie, I would just like to let you know that most of the Serbian nation is behind Nikolic. You hear all these people saying that it will be a close run between Tadic and Nikolic, but have they actually been in Serbia. You should know that we hate the West after all that it has done to us, and we love the Russians because we have the same origins and they are supporting us right now. It's thanks to them that the Yankees have'nt already taken Kosovo. And dou you know why they want it. Ofcourse you don't. They want Kosovo because they have a military base there with a superb strategic position (that's where they bombed Iraq from), they want Kosovo because it has the richest uranium on earth and they want Kosovo beacause it has the biggest supply of rock coal on earth. Hope you lear'nt something...
P.S. How does it feel being taught politics by a fifteen year-old Serb? Pretty humiliating eh???

This is not bad idea. Most Serbians will agree with Nikolic considering Western hostile approach toward Serbia. EU will be cut-off from the East and German dreams (read EU dreams) condensed into two words “Uber Alles” will be shattered.
