In addition, 20 media assistants, mostly technical personnel, also died while in pursuit of journalistic activity.
Eight reporters were killed in Somalia and six died in Pakistan. The total numbers point to an increase of 244 per cent since 2002.
Worldwide 877 journalists were jailed in 2007, and more than 1,500 were attacked by police and security forces. At least 67 reporters were kidnapped, and 528 media outlets were censored and 2676 websites closed.
RSF claimed that only persons were included in the statistics who died actively in the line of journalistic duties.
