First, why do you think that most countries refuses to setup referendums...?
If Ireland did not have to, the treaty would be swiftly ratified without any publicity.

The European Parliament is (apparently) democraticaly elected.
But it has no power. So who has the power?
The European Commission.

Were they democraticaly elected?
Nope.

Are they easily influenced by lobbyists?
Of course. It is close to impossible to lobby hundreds of MPs. It is a lot easier with a few members who have full power.

Can they oppose the democraticaly elected uropean Parliament.
They can, and they did.

Final word: Why do you think your government did almost nothing to inform you about this treaty?
Because informed citizens make informed decisions... and they don't want that!
