EUFOR: search for war crimes suspects in Bosnia continues

Sarajevo - The European Union Force (EUFOR) in Bosnia-Herzegovina has been conducting measures aimed at locating and apprehending war crimes suspects that remain at large, Banja Luka daily Nezavisne novine reported Friday, citing the EUFOR's commander. 'EUFOR intensively searches for the fugitives and it will do so until the end of its mandate,' EUFOR commander, Spanish Major General Ignacio Martin Villalain, said in an interview with the daily. The arrest of persons indicted for war crimes by the Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), he said, remains one of the key priorities of some 2,500-troops strong EUFOR in Bosnia-Herzegovina besides maintaining the peace and stability in the country. Four top war crimes suspects, including the former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and his army commander General Ratko Mladic, remain at large more than 12 years since the ICTY issued indictments against them. Both Karadzic and Mladic were charged with war crimes, genocide, crimes against humanity and severe breaches of the Geneva Conventions during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina. While Mladic is believed to be hiding in Serbia, Karadzic's whereabouts remain unknown.
