Danes see no new risk following al-Qaeda threats

Mar 20, 2008, 19:16 GMT

Copenhagen - Denmark's PET secret service chief, Jakob Scharf, said Thursday in Copenhagen that there was no increased risk of a terrorist attack following the release of video threats against the country possibly from al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

The video, published on the internet on the fifth anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq Thursday, said Denmark's 'reckoning would be severe' over caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed published in Danish newspapers.

PET chief Scharf said the increased threat level his organization declared two weeks ago for Danes and Danish interests outside the country was still valid.

Following the renewed publication of the Mohammed cartoons by Denmark's largest daily, Jyllands Posten, the secret service warned Danish citizens in Muslim countries - especially in North Africa, the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan - to be extra vigilant.

Islam forbids any physical depiction of Mohammed.

Four months after the initial publication in 2005 of the caricatures, some of which depict Mohammed as a terrorist, massive protests in Muslim countries led to 150 deaths and the storming and destruction of several Danish embassies.
